There’s nothing quite like real wood. Imitation veneers are not the same; they cannot possibly copy the colors and unique patterns of nature. If you get your cabinets built from wood, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are completely unique, just as every piece of wood is completely unique.

The more inexpensive varieties of hardwood include birch, oak and pine. All three of these are lighter woods with distinctive grain patterns. Birch is particularly known to be sturdy and tough, appropriate for families with children. The beauty of oak cabinets has made this the popular wood of choice, displaying shades of pink, green and gold. Pine is full of knots, making it visually interesting.

Cherry and walnut woods are more premium. They are dark in color and cost more, but the price only reflects the way your kitchen will look. Hickory is an interesting choice, since its wood shows contrasting shades of pale and dark red in distinctive patterns. It gets used in “country” style kitchens.

If you want to purchase woods are that quick to grow and therefore easily renewable, bamboo is a good choice. It’s hard and very beautiful. Lyptus is a type of exotic hardwood that has begun to gain attention for its sustainability. Many other exotic hardwoods are available, each with its own color and grain patterns, although not all of them may be recommended for cabinetry. Remember that if you can’t afford entirely new cabinets, adding new doors and drawer fronts will make the old ones look almost as handsome.
